I remember the day Chapter 21 dropped like it was yesterday. The Entity's realm got a whole lot spookier, and I was right there, ready to queue up. Let me tell you, this update was a wild ride from start to finish. đ
Back in 2021, Dead by Daylight's Chapters 21 and 21.5 shook up the meta in ways we're still feeling in 2026. From a brand-new survivor to a Halloween event that had us smashing pumpkins, there was a lot to unpack. So grab your flashlight, and let's take a trip down memory lane.
The New Survivor: Mikaela Reid đź

Mikaela Reid arrived just in time for Halloween, and she brought something completely new: boon totems. Unlike hex perks that terrorize survivors, boons are placed by survivors and offer buffs in an area of effect. You could buy her for 9,000 iridescent shards or 400 auric cells, and she was worth every penny. Her perk Boon: Circle of Healing was so powerful that it dominated the meta for monthsâeven after a nerf. Boon: Shadow Step and Clairvoyance also had their moments, but Circle of Healing was the star.
Halloween Event: Midnight Grove đ

The Midnight Grove event ran from October 21 to November 4, 2021, and it was a blast. We got a separate event tome with two pages, spooky cosmetics (including a fleshy skin for the Doctor), and charms. The game was on saleâup to 50% off the base game and 60% off select DLC. And who could forget the 666,666 bloodpoints we all got just for logging in?
The event also introduced "tangled" generators and smashable pumpkins. Smashing those pumpkins was a gamble: sometimes you'd get a sprint burst, sometimes you'd be slowed. I learned that the hard way. đ
New Tome: Tome IX â Crescendo đ”

The next tome gave us more lore for the Trickster and Yun-Jin, plus a ton of skins. The free track had incredible skins for Ălodie and the Plagueâhonestly, they were the best part. The paid track (1,000 auric cells) had skins for Trickster, Yun-Jin, and Feng. But let's be real, those free skins were the shining stars.
General Changes

Item and add-on descriptions got a much-needed overhaul. Instead of vague terms like "considerably" and "tremendously," we now see exact percentages. Add-ons that inflict status effects also explain what they do. As a veteran, I appreciated thisâno more guessing what "mangled" meant.
The hatch and keys got a major nerf. The hatch now only spawns when one survivor is left, no matter how many generators are done. If the killer kicks it closed, you can still open it with a key, but it takes 2.5 seconds (and doesn't lose progress if interrupted). The "Where Did They Go" achievement was changed to just escaping through the hatch. I mean, come on, that was brutal for achievement hunters.
Killer Changes

The Trapper finally got some love. He now starts with two traps, and the map always spawns six traps (previously 4-6, which was RNG hell). The Spirit got a nerf: her power now has a directional audio cue within 24 meters, giving survivors a fighting chance. The Plague got a quality-of-life buffâa minimum threshold for her Vile Purge, plus her puke lasts 40 seconds on objects and survivors get infected twice as fast. The Deathslinger got a short animation for aiming down sights (0.4s) and lowering (0.6s), giving survivors a tiny window to dodge. The Demogorgon's perks became general: Surge â Jolt, Mindbreaker â Fearmonger, Cruel Limits â Claustrophobia.
Killer perks that were underused got buffed. For example, Hex: Retribution now triggers when survivors interact with any totem, and Hex: Blood Favor triggers off a survivor losing a health state. Hex: Thrill of the Hunt now affects both cleansing and blessing totems, with up to 50% penalty. Fearmonger now applies Exhausted and Blindness. A ton of killer add-ons were also tweakedâtoo many to list, but the Nurse's Torn Bookmark got some love.
Survivor Changes

With the Stranger Things DLC leaving, its perks became general for all survivors. Here's the name changes:
| Old Name | New Name |
|---|---|
| Babysitter | Guardian |
| Camaraderie | Kinship |
| Second Wind | Renewal |
| Better Together | Situational Awareness |
| Fixated | Self-Aware |
| Inner Strength | Inner Healing |
Survivor perks also got buffs. Vigil's recovery bonus increased to 30% and now affects Broken, Exposed, and Oblivious. Guardian gives the unhooked survivor a 7% haste effect and hides their aura. For the People's Broken duration reduced to 60 seconds. Windows of Opportunity range increased to 32 meters with no cooldown. Repressed Alliance requires only 45 seconds on a generator. Built to Last was completely reworkedâyou can hide in a locker for 12 seconds to refill 99% of your item's charges (reduced by 33% each use). Any Means Necessary now shows dropped pallet auras. No Mither reduces grunts of pain by 75% and adds 25% recovery speed while dying.
Boon Perk Changes
Boon perks were ridiculously strong at launch. Behavior reined them in: boons no longer stack if layered, the range dropped from 28 to 24 meters, and blessing a hex totem now takes 24 seconds (up from 14). Even so, Circle of Healing remained top meta for a long time. I mean, who didn't see that coming?
Final Thoughts
Looking back from 2026, Chapter 21 was a turning point. It introduced boons, shook up the hatch, and gave killers and survivors meaningful changes. Some of these tweaks have been adjusted further over the years, but the foundation was laid here. If you're a newer player, understanding this update helps you appreciate how far the game has come. And for us veterans, it's a nostalgic reminder of the chaos, the pumpkins, and the witch who changed everything. đ
